Exchange Street Train Station

In 2016 on Exchange Street in Downtown Buffalo sat a fast-deteriorating train station that served the City of Buffalo since the 1950s. In the summer of 2016, it was announced that the train station would be rebuilt. It was completed in November 2020. The exterior exposed structural steel and canopies were all hot-dip galvanized and painted.

Sowinksi Sullivan has a portfolio full of train station projects they designed across the US. For this example, the firm chose a historic design for the new station. This effort lasted for 4 years with the project completion in the fall of 2020.

All 99 tons of steel used a duplex coating system. It was decided that the outdoor canopies would sustain many years of abuse if a duplex coating system was chosen. This duplex system illustrates the best of both worlds in terms of appearance and corrosion protection.

All 198,000lbs of steel was fabricated in the early months of 2020 and galvanized in July-August 2020. In November 2020, the station was made open to the public. The Amtrak station is limited to 2 train routes right now due the pandemic. Both lines go to NY City. Once the Canadian and American borders are made open, it will run along the Maple Leaf Line to the City of Toronto, ON Canada.
