In an effort to support a more sustainable environment, the Ford Motor Company located in Dearborn, Michigan, in cooperation with DTE Energy, decided to build a parking structure that could also function as a source of solar power for their facility. The structure would house charging stations for employees to charge their new electric Ford automobiles as well.
The design firms of Nova Consultants and Carport Structures were encouraged to use hot-dip galvanizing as the best way to maintain a cost-effective and environmentally-friendly structure per the Ford sustainability project team lead by William Ford, Jr. The parking structure utilized 150 tons of hot-dip galvanized structural steel and was complete in 2015.
