“Hot-dip galvanized steel has been a much more economical option for new trailer construction than the aluminum and stainless steel we were using before.”
As the rising cost of aluminum and stainless steel made production and final cost of XPO’s trailers more expensive, they were searching for a more economical way to produce a corrosion resistant trailer. Hot-dip galvanizing was just the solution they were looking for. Most of the components were able to be changed to hot-dip galvanized steel with little or no modification to the manufacturing of the part. The rear door frame took several meetings with the galvanizer to get the design right for hot-dip galvanizing. During the design process, XPO Logistics was able to design special racks for the rear door frames that not only aid in the transportation of the parts, but the galvanizing process as well. Today, multiple components and frames for XPO Logistics box van trailers are galvanized successfully.
